Jean-Loup Samaan

Senior Research Fellow, Middle East Institute, National University of Singapore

Jean-Loup Samaan is a senior research fellow at the Middle East Institute of the National University of Singapore. He is also a non-resident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Scowcroft Middle East Security Initiative, and an associate research fellow with the French Institute of International Relations. His research covers Middle Eastern security affairs, in particular the reforms of Gulf armed forces, Israel’s evolving military strategy and the evolution of non-state warfare in the region. His most recent book, New Military Strategies in the Gulf (2023), looks at the evolving defense policies of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

Israel-Hamas war testing credibility of China's Middle East strategy

Amid China's diplomatic efforts such as a visit to Beijing by Arab and Islamic countries this week, the Israel-Hamas war is bringing about a much-needed reality check on China's ambitions in the Middle East, says Jean-Loup Samaan, a senior research fellow at the Middle East Institute, National University of Singapore.
