His areas of research include Technology and geopolitics, China's technical standardisation power, China's politics of 5G, and EU-China relations. Rühlig also coordinates the working group on high technology and innovation of the "China in Europe Research Network" (CHERN), an EU Cost Action. He is also the author of China's Foreign Policy Contradictions: Lessons from China's R2P, Hong Kong, and WTO Policy (2022).

Germany's new China strategy: A drastic change
Germany's newly unveiled "Strategy on China" echoed much of EU language in highlighting risks concerning competitiveness, supply chain resilience, national security and values in its recalibrated approach to China. While a de-risking strategy carries difficult trade-offs, there seems to be a broad consensus on the goals Germany wants to achieve.
