Lecturer, Sichuan University of Media and CommunicationsYan Pei holds a Master’s degree in Drama and Film Studies from Chongqing University and is currently a lecturer at Sichuan University of Media and Communications. His primary research interests include Sichuan culture, film and television arts, and cross-cultural studies. He has published several papers in core academic journals such as Sichuan Drama and Journal of Cultural Studies, including “Sichuan Opera Film Adaptation: A Symphony of Traditional Art and Modern Imagery” and “Gamified Narratives in the New Chinese Animation School: A Socio-Cultural and Psychological Perspective.”

Face-changing or bian lian is commonly seen in Chinese opera, particularly Sichuan opera. A turn of the head or a swirl of a cape is all a performer needs to change their facial appearance in a sleight of hand that happens in the time it takes for the audience to blink.
