As of 2023, over 20% of China’s population is aged 60 and above, marking the country’s official transition from an ageing society to a moderately ageing society. How do the people of China view this situation? ThinkChina’s Lu Lingming and Yi Jina put the question to some Chinese individuals.

China’s demographic shift is garnering diverse opinions. Some Chinese people view the growing elderly population as a significant challenge, and have concerns about potential strains on the workforce and economic stability. Others see it as an inevitable demographic reality, believing that with effective governance and policy adjustments, China can navigate these changes successfully.

China has introduced various measures to improve the quality of life for the elderly and ensure they are well-supported. However, the growing elderly population raises concerns about the impact it will have on job opportunities for younger generations and the potential need to raise the retirement age. Continued efforts are necessary to enhance support for the elderly and help China adapt to its evolving demographic landscape.
