[Vox pop] Do Chinese workers get enough benefits?
While headlines often focus on China’s intense work culture, what about the benefits that come with the job? Across industries and company types, workers in China are navigating different systems of perks and expectations. ThinkChina’s Lu Lingming and Yi Jina get people from different regions of China to share their thoughts.
In China, there are three main types of companies: state-owned, private and foreign-owned. Even within the same industry, their work cultures — especially when it comes to workload and employee benefits — can look completely different.
Some people shared that state-owned enterprises offer the most stability, with the best social insurance and housing fund policies. Others said that foreign companies tend to be more inclusive and generous with paid leave. One manager at a private company also shared how he provides his team with perks that, in his words, “other local tech companies can’t possibly provide”.
On whether one would choose better perks or a higher salary, the answers were revealing. Despite acknowledging how good benefits can improve the work environment, most young people still leaned toward higher pay — something they see as more important in today’s world.
