[Video] Presenting: The ThinkChina Culture book
The ThinkChina Culture book, a curated collection of our culture articles, was launched at the inaugural ThinkChina Forum in March 2025. Born first as individual articles on our website then as a specially designed book in print, it is the stories that have stayed constant. ThinkChina’s Lu Lingming gives us a glimpse of the pages.
Oftentimes, getting to the heart of a people takes some knowing of their culture, history and society. While the stories on our site change as quickly as the developments they follow, some pieces stay evergreen, perhaps demanding slower reads, best savoured with a cuppa. Taking that as the starting point, we imagined how a curated collection of culture articles — some of the most visual pieces on our site — would be best showcased in print. The result is our first commemorative book: ThinkChina Culture.
Within the folds are stories such as Hong Kong graffiti as a form of art, an outlet to vent, or therapy; breaking, the dance sport that has captivated a new generation of young Chinese; the beauty of shikumen houses, a traditional form of Shanghainese architecture resembling Western townhouses; the last vestiges of cabaret cuisine in Taiwan; and the story of Nanyang art. “We hope these timeless articles will illuminate the diverse cultural facets of the Greater China region and show how Singapore, as part of the “Nanyang” region, has engaged with them,” says Chow Yian Ping, ThinkChina editor.
Even as more pages and chapters of culture stories are being written, ThinkChina Culture captures a moment in time; it’s a reflection of the times. Look out for the commemorative book at future ThinkChina events! Meanwhile, enjoy the great reads here.
