[Video] China's first AI-generated animated series
Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionising China's animation industry by cutting production times and generating culturally distinct content. The first episode of Qianqiu Shisong (《千秋诗颂》), China's first AI-generated animated series, was aired on Chinese state television on 26 February 2024. The series was produced with the help of CMG Media GPT, a generative AI model co-developed by Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and state broadcaster China Media Group.
Qianqiu Shisong comprises 26 episodes of about seven minutes each. Drawing from more than 200 classic Chinese poems found in primary, secondary, and higher education textbooks, the series repackaged educational content with the learning needs and interests of young students in mind.
The generative AI model CMG Media GPT can accurately produce visuals portraying Chinese lifestyle and atmosphere as it has been trained with massive Chinese audio-visual language resources data. With advanced technologies capable of image and character generation and text-to-video synthesis, the AI model halved the production time from eight to four months under the same budget compared to traditional methods. An English-dubbed version of the series entitled "Poems of Timeless Acclaim" was aired on CGTN on 10 March. The series will also be made available in other languages.
