A China-developed AI called DeepSeek has skyrocketed to the top of global download charts — even surpassing ChatGPT and Gemini. Unlike closed AI models, DeepSeek is open-source, offering free access to cutting-edge technology.

Its rapid rise has triggered a massive sell-off in global tech stocks, with Nvidia losing nearly US$600 billion in market value in a single day. Meanwhile, rising geopolitical tensions raise new questions: will DeepSeek reshape the AI race, or is it just a temporary shake-up?
