[Video] China ’s village super leagues: Where culture and economy score big!
China’s village super leagues, whether for basketball, football or volleyball, go beyond mere games; they are cultural extravaganzas where people of all ages participate as athletes, cheerleaders, chefs or avid spectators.
Small villages, big spotlight. China’s village super league matches have drawn basketball stars like Yao Ming, Jimmy Butler and Stephon Marbury, and facilitated exchanges with teams from Africa, France and beyond. Even the English Premier League took notice, launching a four-day course for 44 local coaches in Rongjiang county, Guizhou in December 2023.
These super leagues have also spurred significant growth for local economies. Rongjiang county’s football super leagues drew over 7.65 million visitors, contributing over 8.5 billion RMB to the county’s tourism revenue in 2023. Likewise, Taipan village in Taijiang county, Guizhou, is home to “Village BA” (also known as 村BA or CunBA). Village BA helped Taijiang county attract 4.68 million visitors and generated 5.43 billion RMB last year.
